2011 Expert Skills Demonstrations

Using the 12′6″ Tom Cat design by the late William Garden as a starting point, expert skills demonstrations will cover subjects from understanding lines, to making parts from planks to metal fittings, right through to outfitting for safety.

Each demonstration lasts 1 hour.

Day 1: June 24, 2011

  • 10:00 a.m — lines and lofting (John Brooks — Paint Shed)
  • 11:30 p.m. — molds and setup (Tom Jackson — Paint Shed)
  • 1:00 a.m. — Laminated structures (Brion Rieff — Paint Shed)
  • 2:30 p.m. — Steam bending frames (Walter Ansel/Rob Whalen — Shipyard)

Day 2: June 25, 2011

  • 10:00 a.m. — Plank spiling (Seth Ahrenholz — Paint Shed)
  • 11:30 a.m. — Traditional planking (Walter Ansel — Paint Shed)
  • 1:00 p.m. — Caulking (Rob Whalen/Walter Ansel — Paint Shed/Shipyard)
  • 2:30 p.m. — Plywood-epoxy boatbuilding (Geoff Kerr — Paint Shed)
  • 4:00 p.m. — Vacuum bagging transom (John Brooks — Paint Shed)

Day 3: June 26, 2011

  • 10:00 a.m. — Difficult fits/breasthook & quarterknees (Harry Bryan — Paint Shed)
  • 11:30 a.m. — Metal brazing/fittings (Harry Bryan — Paint Shed)
  • 1:00 p.m. — Mastmaking (Clint Chase — Paint Shed)
  • 2:30 p.m. — Sails and rigging (Matt Otto — Paint Shed/Shipyard)
  • 4:00 p.m. — Safety equipment (David Wyman — Paint Shed)

Daily Tours 2011

  • Big shipyard tools, 1 p.m. each day — Scott Noseworthy
  • Rossi Mill small-craft and marine engine collections tour, 2:30 to 4:30 each day — Scott Noseworthy
  • 1841 whaleship CHARLES W. MORGAN restoration tours, 4 p.m. each day — Quentin Snediker
