Film & Video Series
Movie Marathon
Last year we had a very interesting and successful Film Series that ran all three days of the Show. This year we have an equally riveting group of videos planned. Here’s a sampling of what you can expect to see during the Show. Films will run all three days in the Greenmanville Church by the North Entrance, all three days from 12-4pm.
Alone in the Wilderness 60 minutes
Richard Proenneke found a place in Alaska, built a cabin, and stayed to become part of the country. This video is a simple account of the day-to-day explorations he carried out alone in the late 1960’s. Though boats are a small part of the story, anyone with an interest in hand tools and “making do” will love this.
Devil Boat The Saga of PT 658 66 minutes
Devil Boat follows a group of Portland, Oregon PT veterans as they attempt to resurrect a PT boat from the ravages of time and neglect. With the restoration as a backdrop, the movie takes the viewer on an up-close-and-personal journey into the history of the boat. This is truly an emotional story of a group of veterans and their project.
Building of the St. Rosalie 24 minutes
This video came from the collection at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum in Essex, MA and documents the building of a large commercial fishing boat sometime after World War II in Essex. The film is narrated by the owner of the boat and chronicles not only it’s building but life in Essex in 1947.
Downeast Lobsterman 30 minutes
This video chronicles Maine lobstering in the mid -1950’s through the profile of one lobsterman, Pat Moore of Five Islands, Maine. Memories are shared by lobsterman and boat builder, Billy Plummer, III and folklorist Bill Bonyun of Westport. The viewer will glimpse the forgotten skills of trap building, weaving head nets, and whittling pegs with the dramatic beauty of Maine’s seacoast as a backdrop.
Peapods of the Maine Coast 85 minutes
Peapods is a compilation of interviews with 12 individuals who have a knowledge of these little double-ended boats. Peapods are thought to have originated around 1870 in the Penobscot Bay region and were the original lobster boat. Topics include their construction, history, anecdotes, and technical information. This video was created by the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine.
World Voyagers
A presentation will be made by authors, Philip Shelton and Amy Wood, of their book “World Voyagers”. Philip and Amy will cover the design and construction of their 42 foot wooden cutter “Iwalani” and their three year circumnavigation. This is featured as a “no holds barred” account of what it’s like to live a “dream.”
