WoodenBoat Show News
Issue #2 — March 2008

Winter is hanging on stubbornly in this part of the country but that hasn't stopped us from pulling all the pieces together for another great Show. The expanded water and land spaces are filling up with lots of exciting exhibits and, most of all, boats! Below we'll tell you a little more detail about the Skills Demonstrations planned. We hope you're including the WoodenBoat Show in your summer plans. Tickets are going fast, and the deadline for discounted tickets is May 1st.
Pick Up Some New Skills at the Show!
Tom Jackson, WoodenBoat Senior Editor, offers insight on what you can expect to learn at the Skills Demonstrations
Tom, please tell us why we offer skills demonstrations at the WoodenBoat Show?
Sometimes, wooden boat building skills seem daunting. But seeing something done by someone who knows how to do it can often clear the way to doing the same thing yourself. The demonstration of these skills at the WoodenBoat Show give people a very real opportunity to learn a lot in a hurry, and many times people will come back again and again during the course of the show to learn more.
Why is Mystic Seaport so ideal for these kinds of demonstrations?
Mystic Seaport is an especially good place to see these skills, because we can draw on all of the people who work in the DuPont Preservation Shipyard, which is nearing completion of the enormous Eastern-rigged dragger ROANN. This is a chance to meet the skilled craftsmen and draw on their rich experience. Caulking, steambending, and understanding diesel engines are among their likely subjects.
Please tell us about some of the presenters.
We'll have engaging presenters from many different areas. Harry Bryan, a boatbuilder from New Brunswick who is a regular teacher at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine, will talk about metalworking skills useful to boatbuilders, especially in fabricating shop-built tools. Sam Johnson, a boatbuilder of Seattle, Washington, will do one session each day on setting up and using a simple kiln for casting silicon bronze—and he’ll pour molten metal to demonstrate this very useful skill for making fittings for small boats. Geoff Kerr of Two Daughters Boatworks in Vermont will talk about his forte: lapstrake plywood-epoxy boatbuilding.
Clark Poston from the International Yacht Restoration School will also be one of our presenters from the skills demonstrations at Mystic. He’s the Program Director at IYRS, and he’ll be talking about what to look for in considering a wooden boat to restore.
When is the best time to come to the Show to participate in these demonstrations?
We'll have five one-hour demonstrations on Friday, five on Saturday, and four on Sunday. A full schedule will be printed in the boat show program. Look for the demonstrations area sign near the red shipyard building at the south end of the Mystic Seaport site.
Featured Exhibitor — Six River Marine
Six River Marine brings new West Pointer 18 to the Show
Six River Marine located in North Yarmouth, Maine will be displaying their West Pointer 18 at the show. The West Pointer series of boats, also available in a 22' version, are hand crafted using the cold-molded wood/epoxy method. This yields a light weight, strong hull that performs equally well on quiet water as it does when the seas pipe up. The classic hull shape of the West Pointer, with its generous beam, easily gets on plane providing a dry, stable ride through a wide range of fuel-efficient speeds.
SixRiverMarine specializes in new boat construction and restoration of wooden boats in the finest Maine tradition. In addition to the West Pointer 18 on display, the company will have information on its new Harbor Island series of boats along with plenty of photos representing past restoration work. Co-owners Scott Conrad and Chip Miller will be at the show, and look forward to seeing everyone there.
