Appreciate These Beauties & More

Caledonia YawlPatina looks traditional but is constructed with some high tech materials. Bruynzeel 10 mm mahogany plywood fastened with epoxy and bulletproof kevlar makes her a product of modern chemistry and not a slave to traditional performance. This 19.5-foot Caledonia Yawl, designed by Iain Oughtred, is light, fast and quick to setup and launch. She was recently built by Edward Segen.

The 55-foot L. Francis Herreshoff Mobjack, Long White Cloud, was custom built by Laurence Giles Boat Builders of New Zealand in 1996. The hull is diagonally cold-molded epoxy laminate of Kauri timber. All deck hardware and fittings are custom made bronze. The current owners, Paula and Stephen Pepperell, are sailing her up from the Caribbean for the show.

From the comfortable cruising appointments to the ultimate accommodations for entertaining, Solipsys has it all. Exposed ash beams, teak and ash sole, butternut doors, shelf tops and cabinets plus an L shaped galley counter top of Koa are among her interior features. Pease Boat Works will display this yacht as an example of their craftsmanship.

Here’s Something You Don’t See Every Day

Learn about Japan’s Traditional Wooden Boats

Tub boatsTaraibune, or tub boats, are unique inshore fishing boats now found only on Sado Island in the Sea of Japan. Despite their primitive appearance, these boats still put to sea every day to gather shellfish and seaweed and to take tourists for rides. Douglas Brooks apprenticed with the last builder of these boats and recently published The Tub Boats of Sado Island; A Japanese Craftsman's Methods. He will display a tub boat and more in his booth.

As part of the Film and Video Series, Doug will present a slide talk during which he will share his experiences in Japan building five types of traditional boats and interviewing dozens of traditional craftsmen.

Do You Like REALLY Small Wooden Boats?

Sail or Build a Vintage Model Yacht

Model YachtMembers of the US Vintage Model Yacht Group (VMYG) will perform sailing demonstrations from 10 to 2 daily, providing visitors the opportunity for “hands-on” mentoring. Builders can learn to construct cold-molded wooden model yachts through lectures by the VMYG historian or purchase US VMYG “how to” model building books and AMYA magazines on R/C model yachting.

On display in their booth on Lighthouse Point will be an eight-foot R/C model of the 1910 fishing schooner “Elsie” — sister design to Mystic Seaport’s “L. A. Dunton” schooner. Bring your old sailing model to them for a no-charge evaluation of its design origins and restoration needs.

VMYG conducts research and writes articles on the history of the sport of model yachting, which led to the American Model Yachting Collection (archives) at the Mystic Seaport Museum Library.
