Learn Casting Techniques and Other Skills
Boat builders, whether professional or amateur, are often in need of special bronze fittings that are either not available or must be cast at great expense. Sam Johnson will demonstrate how to build an inexpensive furnace, make a proper mold, and pour some interesting pieces of boat hardware.
Learn how to make your own purpose-specific boatbuilding tools from Harry Bryan, a popular teacher at the WoodenBoat School and a co-author of the Apprentice’s Workbench section of WoodenBoat magazine. These demonstrations and many more will be offered throughout the run of the show.

“To me, skills demonstrations have always been the heart of any wooden boat show. Every time I’ve gone to a boat festival — which is a lot of them — I’ve had a chance to learn something important from someone who knows. I’m especially excited about our lineup this year. We’ll have fourteen sessions covering everything from casting bronze hardware for small boats, to a Dutch craftsman making traditional blocks, to the techniques of wood-and-epoxy boatbuilding. Presenters from Mystic Seaport’s duPont Preservation Shipyard, will cover a range of skills from cutting bevels on an enormous bandsaw to boat caulking, steam-bending wood, splicing wire rigging, understanding diesel engines, and making three- strand rope. Here’s your chance to see work done, ask questions, and go back home even more determined than ever to start your own project” – Tom Jackson, Senior Editor, WoodenBoat
“Looking for a ‘Slice of Heaven’? There is no better place to go than Mystic Pizza. Not only is the pizza great but, the movie ‘Mystic Pizza’ starring Julia Roberts was filmed there.” – Patty Hutchinson, Circulation Dept.
